It’s another Spacesuit drawing. I’m still hammering out details for a comic so in the meantime I figured I’d do some character design work.

BTW, congrats to SpaceX and NASA for having a successful docking of the Dragon capsule to the ISS!! Now let’s hope for a flawless reentry and splash down on May 31st. GO DRAGON GO!

“Godspeed Dragon”

The current Administrator of NASA, Charles Bolden uttered the most badass phrase in the history of space today: “Godspeed Dragon.”

What the who is Dragon?! It’s an unmanned space capsule designed, built, and launched by SpaceX atop their in-house Falcon 9 rocket. Eventually the capsule will hold up to 7 crew members. The brainchild company of Elon Musk is hoping to become the first private enterprise to visit the International Space Station. Today this company took a giant leap in that direction with another successful launch of the Falcon 9 rocket, which has suffered delays recently do to software and hardware issues. The coolest fact I learned about the Dragon Capsule from the slightly juvenile however thorough coverage of today’s (May 22nd) launch was that it will be the only system allowing for transport of substantial cargo back FROM the ISS to Earth since the Shuttle. Apparently the Soyuz is only good for hauling back about a lunch-box sized container per crew member. Figures. You ever see the interior of one of those things? Cosmonauts are packed in there like vienna sausages! Best doc I’ve seen about being a cosmonaut is Man on a Mission. Go watch it. It’s fantastic.

…I digress. This historic day belongs to SpaceX. They’ve accomplished something that only a few countries have been able to do. ”So what exactly did they do today?!” Let me count it down; third successful launch of the Falcon 9 rocket, second successful flight of the Dragon Capsule, FIRST PRIVATE COMPANY TO VISIT THE ISS (actually it won’t dock with the ISS for a few days, but I’m giving it to ‘em.) You may now consider space’s private sector officially opened!!

Congrats to SpaceX and their 1800 employees.* I’m sure they’re all getting wicked hammered tonight. I will certainly be following the progress of this mission over the next 10 days.

You lucky dogs. Here’s another space drawing. I’m still working on a “working-man-in-space” story that may or may not see the light of day…I have to come up with a “story” first. Nothing like a good cup of joe after months of chasing asteroids, amiright?!

Sorry folks. Been a little busy the last 3 days with feeling sick and planning a get together for my girlfriends’ birthday. HOWEVER, in leu of me posting new work today, I’m linking to two really really interesting video/animations about Dark Matter and the Higgs Boson. They’re very well done and super informative, ESPECIALLY if you think Physicists have nothing left to do these days. Also, these videos illustrate just how STUPID we were as Americans to let the center of particle physics move to Europe.

He’s the sexiest astrophysicist alive…what else can I say? UPDATE after the jump!

Neil deGrasse Tyson gave an amazing speech for the 28th National Space Symposium. Keep in mind I watch Neil on an almost constant basis so if I’m still impressed, you know it’s good. If you have an extra hour take the time to listen to why Space is more important than anything you care about.

One moment (out of many) that really struck me from this talk was when Tyson mentioned missing out on a generation of scientist. He’s right. The smartest kids I went to school with work in finance. And look where that’s gotten us.

If you don’t know about the asteroid mining company that James Cameron and other bazillionaires are announcing on April 24th, you’re not my true friend. If you’re not busy today, tune in at 12:30 Central to this website to watch a live streaming of the press conference for Planetary Resources. Oh, and you heard me right, it’s a FREAKING ASTEROID MINING COMPANY!!! Here’s an article from ABC News on the story. Also, I’ve drawn some images of James Cameron riding an asteroid pronouncing yet again that he is king of the world. I’ve posted two because I couldn’t decide which I liked better.
