“Godspeed Dragon”

The current Administrator of NASA, Charles Bolden uttered the most badass phrase in the history of space today: “Godspeed Dragon.”

What the who is Dragon?! It’s an unmanned space capsule designed, built, and launched by SpaceX atop their in-house Falcon 9 rocket.  Eventually the capsule will hold up to 7 crew members.  The brainchild company of Elon Musk is hoping to become the first private enterprise to visit the International Space Station.  Today this company took a giant leap in that direction with another successful launch of the Falcon 9 rocket, which has suffered delays recently do to software and hardware issues.  More on this after the jump: Read More »

Over the Edge

I’ve been reading about this epic story for years.  The project is entitled Red Bull Stratos.  The gist is Felix Baumgartner is attempting to break 3 records: highest skydive, longest free-fall, and fastest fall.  If all goes to plan Felix will be the first person to break the sound barrier without the use of a machine.  On March 15th, 2012 Felix completed his highest test jump yet at 17 miles (about twice as high airliners cruise.)  The Stratos website has great details about the custom suit, capsule, and team.  It’s a “must peruse” for any true nerd.

Drop the SOPA

SOPA sounds terrible.  I was going to take down my website today in protest, like Wikipedia has…but then I realized no one would notice.  So instead I’m going to link to a few helpful websites:

Gizmodo has an easy to understand break-down of why SOPA is so ridiculous.

Everyone’s big advise is to contact your Representative and say you’re not for the bill.  SO GO DO THAT RIGHT NOW!!

Faster Than Light!

CERN Labs recently released findings of neutrinos moving faster than the speed of light.  If this is proven to be true, we’re going to have to rethink/throw out some popular theories of physics…so I’m told.

UARS Re-enters!

The Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite (UARS) is bus-sized satellite that was launched in 1991 to study the hole in the Ozone layer.  It’s scheduled to reenter the atmosphere on Friday Sept. 23…

New NASA Rocket

Recently, NASA released it’s much delayed and anticipated rocket design that will be replacing the Constellation program.  The new design is called the SLS (Space Launch System.)  Without a doubt, this is the worst named rocket in NASA history!  It couldn’t be more literal or boring!  Hit the jump for an artist’s rendition of NASA’s new SLS.
